It’s been an eventful 100 years for the Leviton Manufacturing Company. From the early days at the dawn of the electrical age through today’s digital era, Leviton has achieved a remarkable record of success by offering innovative, quality electrical and electronic devices at a reasonable cost. Along the way it has grown into the largest privately held manufacturer of wiring devices in North America. Like many big businesses, Leviton didn’t start big. The company was founded in 1906, by a man and his son, each of whom had a dream, a vision and the dedication to realize them. In one bold move, the Leviton Manufacturing Company jumped from the gas lamp technology of the 19th century into the modern electric-powered age of the 20th century. There was no looking back. As electricity was installed in more new homes, apartments, and businesses, Leviton rose to new challenges, accommodating the increasing demand and satisfying the evolving needs of the marketplace.
Throughout the years, Leviton has set industry standards for product design and innovation; the company holds over 600 design patents. The Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) and the touch dimmer, both introduced by Leviton in 1972, revolutionized home electrical safety and lighting controls, respectively. The Decora® line of designer-style wiring devices, unveiled one year later, did the same for wiring devices. Over thirty years later, all three are still top sellers, and incorporate some of the latest updates; GFCIs now offer the increased protection of SmartLockPRO® technology; Leviton’s lighting control offering now includes state-of-the-art Vizia-RF wireless lighting control based on Zensys’ innovative Z-Wave technology.
